The title is neither a misnomer nor an attractive strategy to lure visitors, but a comparison; literally. The founder of Rough Guides, Mark Ellingham has compared the damage done by travelers as equivalent to that of the tobacco industry. He once encouraged people to take up traveling without thinking too much about it.

Ellingham feels that the amount of pollution caused by travelers is tremendous with the planes spewing an awful amount of CO2 into the atmosphere. He rejects the idea of ethical travel. What about green travel?

‘The tobacco industry fouled up the world while denying [it] as much as possible for as long as they could,’ said Ellingham. ‘If the travel industry rosily goes ahead as it is doing, ignoring the effect that carbon emissions from flying are having on climate change, we are putting ourselves in a very similar position to the tobacco industry.’

The rate of pollution caused by planes is increasing gradually and is expected to treble by 2030. Ellingham is proposing green tax; a tax that should be imposed on all travelers in order to nullify the effect of environment destruction caused by him.

It looks like Ellingham is repenting his once-upon-a-time decision of letting the tiger on the prowl.

As people get richer, they would want to jump into a bandwagon reserved only for the elite. The super rich want to try their hand in something that would be unreachable for almost everyone. Space traveling is by no means a commercial venture(as of now) and this is exactly what they are looking for.

Telecommunications entrepreneur and X Prize sponsor Anousheh Ansari was the first privately funded female space traveler in September of 2006 when she spent a week on International Space Station. She must have spent millions of pounds for this once-in-a-lifetime trip.

She spoke to Wired last week and has shared some of the video clips shot while she was in space. She is extremely passionate about space that she is willing to let go of her husband if she is offered a one way ticket to space. I support her views on different space projects to be undertaken and some change in policies. Space travel could be for the super rich but let them make a difference to us as they are the only ones who can.

When we go on a trip, there is a higher chance of us falling in love with the locals than the place itself. Most tourists would remember the locals by their hearts and remember the places through pictures and videos. It is extremely important for us as locals in the places we reside to please these tourists than to look for gains.

The Travel Channel chose the Ulles from more than 900 couples in a series – ‘1000 places to see before you die’. There was something special about this couple that separated them from the rest. Albin and Melanie Ulle talked about the people they met than the destination itself. Here is an excerpt:

The maitre d’ in France who proudly wore an American flag on his lapel.

The Bhutan citizens who measure “gross national happiness” rather than the gross national product.

And a poor black South African woman who single-handedly put four girls through private school during apartheid and later ran for mayor of her township.

The only way you and I can make a difference to promote tourism is being a good host and an exceptional friend.

A research done by Tourism Australia shows that singles under the age of 35 would rather buy gadgets than to spend it on traveling. Australia has seen a dip of 15% in the past five years with respect to singles under 35 who prefer to travel. The meteoric rise of gadgets has seen its first side effects affecting the travel business. Here’s a small section of that report:

The report found the greatest domestic travelers in Australia were childless working couples, followed by families with children and empty nesters. At the bottom of the table were “adolescents”, defined as people aged younger than 35, single and probably living with their parents.

I think the findings and the facts are very logical and realistic. Childless couples have the best chance to travel as their baggage is much lighter than the couples who have kids. While some people like traveling alone, many prefer to go with a special partner. If singles are ‘single’, I doubt that many would be inclined on traveling alone. Maybe the tourism department needs to start more social clubs for singles and then encourage them to travel.

Two summers back, I wanted to travel to California from Ohio as I was in my friend’s wedding. I had all the ducks in a row as Ashton Kutcher says in ‘A Lot Like Love’ like time off work and finances except that I had a mid sized chocolate colored Labrador. I had to either find her a dog sitter or fly her with me. When all my attempts failed to find her a dog sitter, I finally decided to fly her with me and the experience was not a pleasurable one.

The humane society of the United States does not encourage pet owners to carry their pets along with them on the flights unless it is unquestionably unavoidable. Some smaller pets like cats and tiny dogs are allowed to travel in the passenger cabin by some airlines. The pet containers are considered as a carry-on luggage and it should fit the aircraft’s carry-on luggage dimensions.

Airlines such as British airways provide professional relocation of pets. If the pets are relocated to different countries, there might be certain laws that the pets need to be quarantined for a certain period of time before they are united with their owners. Relocating pets to a different country could be a horrific experience and my advice would be not to do so.
