Here’s the extract of Asia Travel Intentions Survey 2007: Commissioned by Visa Asia Pacific and PATA, the research conducted between 20 February and 2 March 2007, using an online methodology. The research was conducted by GMI Research in 10 countries: Australia, Canada, China, Germany, India, Japan, Korea, Sweden, the UK and the US. A total of 5,050 respondents were identified and categorized as committed or possible Asia travelers and were asked to comment on the following potential barriers: travel experience and intentions, attitudes to travel in Asia and particular destinations, the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, perceptions of negative events and culturally and environmentally sustainable tourism.

Thailand was voted as the most preferred tourist spot in Asia followed by China and Japan. Many people who voted for Thailand were repeat visitors to Thailand. India was also included in the survey as there was evidence of 4.4 million visitors to India last year and around 8.3 million Indian visitors heading abroad.

Of all the people surveyed, 52% of them showed interesting in visiting Asia which is an increase over 9% compared to last year’s survey and 18% increase compared to 2005. About two thirds of the visitors surveyed had visited Asia previously and half of them had been to Thailand.

Earlier this month, I had written about World’s most livable cities. On the same lines, Mercer group has a top 25 list for the World’s cleanest cities. The list is topped by Calgary in Canada. Most of the cities (23 out of 25) lie in the Northern Hemisphere. Japan is the only Asian country on the list. There are no countries from South America, Africa and Australia continents. Auckland and Wellington in New Zealand are the only cities from the Southern Hemisphere.

How are the cities rated for cleanliness?
•	A city has to face and resolve unsanitary problems and poor living condition
•	Production of energy for homes and industries needs to well planned and regulated
•	Waste management that involves closed landfills and preferably recycling which could bring profits
•	Well managed transportation infrastructure that could impact cleanliness
•	Logistical infrastructure that could possibly be a fuel saver and hence less pollution

You don’t often associate an Indian city which is popular for its beaches and party life. A cow sitting in the middle of a crowded street is the first thing people think of when they hear about India. Let me introduce you to a western-like place. Buckle up and believe what you read.

Goa is a state in India located in the South Western part of India. It possesses several internationally renowned beaches. Many fun activities like wind surfing, paragliding, sailing, and tanning are a common feature at the beaches. Party atmosphere sets in as the sun disappears and the reggae music is just too ideal for some slow dancing.

If you are traveling towards the east, don’t forget to stop over at Goa for a special party atmosphere filled with a combination of indigenous alcoholic drinks along with some western favorites.

Mercer Human Resource Consulting has published a list of World’s most livable cities. The cities are rated on 39 different criteria which include transportation, political stability, currency-exchange regulations, political and media censorship, school quality, housing, the environment, public safety and others. Mercer is known to give advice to multi national companies like Microsoft, Accenture, Dell etc.

The list’s top runners are mostly from Europe with Zurich, the Swiss capital ruling the roost. The top most American city in the list is Honolulu, Hawaii at number 27 which is rather surprising for a progressive nation like the US. Vancouver from Canada is at the third position proving the US that Canada is a better place to live in. The top most Indian city, New Delhi is at a paltry 148 and the city that I live in, Bangalore is at 153.

Analyzing and comparing the last year’s list with the current one, it is evident that the livability in cities don’t change rapidly which is good news for many businesses, MNCs and mainly residents.
